Dimensions peculiar to urban life, such as high population density, proximity to power centers, heterogeneity of residents in terms of class and ethnicity, susceptibility to political action, and tensions between rich and poor, have considerable impact on educational policies. Important studies have been conducted on urban conditions in the developed world, but few studies on education in Third World cities have appeared. This volume looks at urban problems related to education cross-nationally, beginning with a careful definition of what is distinctly urban in educational settings. Chapters on trends and issues, bureaucratic dynamics, disparities and inequities, goals, neighborhood movements, politics, and the experience of women and marginal students round out this internationally contributed volume.

This book examines mortality rates for African-Americans in selected U.S. urban areas in relation to both social class and the degree of black-white residential segregation. Mortality rates for African-American infants and young adults are shown to be especially high in certain highly-segregated areas. The findings will foster the development of the "epidemiology of American apartheid", a new field of research that has relevance to social and health policy. The intended audience includes sociologists (especially medical sociologists) who are likely to be familiar with segregation but not with its potential relevance to the health of African-Americans. Epidemiologists have recently turned to the study of racism and health, but epidemiologic studies have not dealt specifically with black-white segregation and health. Psychologists interested in racism are important potential collaborators with sociologists and epidemiologists in studies of the epidemiology of racial difference in health. Readers working in social policy and health policy areas, including urban issues, should also find relevant material. This work fits within the framework of Swedish economist Gunnar Myrdal's thesis that the American creed of equality of opportunity remains unfulfilled.

For the first time in history, half of the world's population is living in cities. By the year 2025, it is estimated that more than two-thirds will be urban dwellers. While the fastest growth of cities is taking place in the developing world, urbanization is a global phenomenon, closely related to environmental issues. The rapid growth of urban centers will place tremendous stress on the environment and pose formidable problems of social and institutional change, infrastructure development, and pollution control. Water will be one of the key resources for sustainable urban development. It is needed for virtually every human endeavor--for household use, agriculture, industry, leisure--and water also has an important ecosystem function. Provision of sufficient water and preventing pollution however, are formidable tasks. It is estimated that about 380 million urban residents worldwide lack adequate sanitation and at least 170 million still do not have access to a nearby source of safe drinking water. Making clean water available in the next forty or so years will require extending service to 3.7 billion more urban residents. In this book, leading experts from four continents offer unique insights into varied issues of urban water management. In case studies, the authors seek solutions and identify strategies for sustainable management of water resources for burgeoning mega-cities. They consider both technical issues, such as wastewater reuse, and management issues, including financial mechanisms for improved water sector management.

Family life has changed rapidly over te past fifty years and the number of people living longer increases year on year Family and Community Life of Older People revisits three areas (Bethnal Green in London, Wolverhampton in the Midlands and Woodford in Essex) which were the subject of classic studies in the late 1940s and 1950s and explores changes to the family and community lives of older people. The book examines issues such as:*changes in household composition*changes in the geographical proximity of kin and relatives*the extent and type of help provided by the family*contact and relationships with neighbours*relationships with friends*involvement in social and leisure activities*experiences of minority ethnic groups.These questions are explored through a unique set of data including census material, and survey data from interviews with over 600 older people.
