This book is designed to examine issues related to schools, violence, and society. Since the 1960s, crime and violence have been increasing in America's schools. This violence is not limited to inner-city schools, but has struck virtually every strata and socio-economic level of American culture and society. The prevalence of crime and violence occurring in our nation's schools has become the concern of policymakers on the national and state levels. Concern has spread to parents, educators, and students themselves. This edited volume reviews violence in society, school violence, and crime. Coverage includes past trends in school violence and describes the current extent of the problem, as well as tspects of its causes and prevention. The influence on the students and community of gang activity, gang-related issues, drugs, alcohol, and weapons on campus is discussed.

This is the first book to give a general account of the transformation of classics in English schools and universities from being the amateur knowledge of the Victorian gentleman to that of the professional scholar, or from an elite social marker to a marginalized academic subject. The challenges to the authority of classics in 19th-century England are analyzed, as are the many and various ideological responses of its practitioners. The impact of university reform on the content and organization of classical knowledge is described in detail, with special reference to Cambridge. Chapters are devoted to the effects of state intervention, social snobbery, and democracy on the provision of classics in schools, and the dissensions within the bodies set up to defend it. The narrative runs clear up to the present, fully covering along the way the abolition of Compulsory Latin in 1960 and the absence of classics from the National Curriculum in 1988.

Invisible Children in the Society and Its Schools, Second Edition offers a series of reports by some of the most passionate and insightful scholars writing in the field of education today on groups of children and young people whose complexity, strengths, and vulnerabilities are largely unseen or unheard in the society and its schools. The metaphors of invisibility and visibility are used to explore the social and school lives of groups of children and young people in North America who are socially devalued in the sense that alleviating the often difficult conditions of their lives is not a priority. This includes children who are subjected to derogatory stereotypes; children who are educationally neglected in schools that respond inadequately, if at all, to their needs; and children who receive relatively little attention from scholars in the field of education or writers in the popular press. The chapters detail oversights and assaults-visible and invisible-but also affirm the capacity of many of these young people to survive, flourish, and often educate others, despite the painful and even desperate circumstances of their lives. By sharing the voices of the young, providing basic information about particular groups of children and young people, and offering thoughtful analysis of their social situation, this volume combines education and advocacy in an accessible volume responsive to the life-and-death issues of our time.
