Peacekeeping has always been one of the most visible symbols of the UN role in international peace and security, and this book explores the evolution of its peacekeeping activities, particularly since the early 1990s. It combines academic analysis, field experience, and reflection with forward-looking proposals for more effective peace operations designed and deployed by the UN in partnership with regional, sub-regional, and local agencies. The book examines: the challenges of post-cold war peacekeeping; regional experiences of peacekeeping missions, with an emphasis on the post-Soviet region and Africa; the experiences in Cambodia, former Yugoslavia, and East Timor; and the future role of the UN in peace operations.

What value were the widely publicised United Nations-sponsored World Conferences in the 1990s and what was actually accomplished at the global meetings in Rio, Vienna, and Beijing? The authors of United Nations-sponsored World Conferences demonstrate through their case studies that answering these sorts of questions requires a focus on the follow-up to and implementation of the Conferences and not simply attention to the conferences themselves. They argue that the terms of public debate on the accomplishments of such conferences, and thus the future of similar conferences, must include a careful assessment of their impacts long after the final documents have been passed.They suggest that previous works on such conferences have only told part of the story and thus should not, by themselves, be used as a basis for public policy decisions regarding their future.

This publication contains papers that were presented at the United Nation University Millennium Conference held in Tokyo19-21 January 2000. The papers take stock of key international trends for peace, the environment, and development and governance, while considering their implications for the United Nations in the 21st Century. The implications and the recommendations arose from the following issues: the impact of globalisation; key challenges in the short and medium terms; the manner in which national governments and the international community might more broadly address the challenges; the comparative advantage the UN has, or could have, in working with the international community in addressing the challenges; the potential for partnerships among states, international organisations, commercial organisations and civil society in collectively addressing these challenges; and the element of 'surprise' or unpredictability and potential critical developments. The United Nations University has the mandate to link the worlds of scholarship and policy making. The aim of this volume is to contribute to this objective.
