Bruce Cole begins his look at the life and works of Titian with a survey of Venetian art of the 14th and 15th centuries then shows how Giovanni Bellini was the major founder of Venetian Renaissance painting. He continues with the works of Giorgione, Sebastiano del Piombo, and the young Titian, showing how their works created a new style of painting different from the Renaissance painters of Florence and elsewhere in Italy. With Titian's maturity as an artist came his undisputed leadership in Venetian painting and reputation as one of the giants along with Michelangelo, Raphael, and Leonardo of the High Renaissance.
All of Titian's major works are discussed and explained -- his portraits, religious paintings, and nudes. 119 black and white illustrations are integrated with the text and there are 8 plates in full color.
