The research is based on an in-depth analysis of one hospital-based program that primarily serves middle class suburban white clients. The author includes unique long-term follow-up interviews of former patients and program dropouts six years after treatment and identifies the sociodemographic correlates linked to the completion of treatment and the maintenance of drug-free status during young adulthood. The book also focuses on the impact of the social characteristics and behavior of patients' families upon their long-term rehabilitations.

This collection reports on the progress of the intervention programs first described in Innovative Approaches in the Treatment of Drug Abuse: Program Models and Strategies (Inciardi and Fletcher, 1993). By examining the implementation of treatment initiatives, this study focuses on an area often neglected in the research literature: the context in which research is conducted. Applied researchers, particularly those who study users of illicit drugs, face many obstacles that investigators working in more controlled settings, or with more predictable and compliant subjects, often do not encounter. These accounts demonstrate the challenges in producing rapid improvement in treatment for the vulnerable and underserved population of drug abusers. A close study of these efforts will be useful to other researchers in planning for and solving implementation problems that can be anticipated, and in providing guidelines and strategies to overcome those that cannot.

The findings, analysis, and recommendations should counteract misunderstanding and misinformation about the nature of drug abuse among 5.5. million patients and what can be done to help them. The survey covers methadone programs, residential programs, case management programs, and multi-modal and other eclectic programs addressing "real world" situations among different populations in a range of community-based programs. Investigators at the National Institute on Drug Abuse describe 15 projects that test intervention strategies to improve client recruitment, retention, performance, and treatment outcomes.
