Football: Smith Is Facing Cash-Hit Future

WREXHAM boss Denis Smith will have to prepare for life in the Second Division without a transfer kitty.

And the former Stoke defender will begin holding talks with his 15 out-of-contract players after tomorrow's season finale against Bury at Gigg Lane.

The Red Dragons clinched automatic promotion last weekend and are hoping to beat Hartlepool to second place. But Smith has already been told by the cash-strapped club that there will be no money for him to spend on summer signings.

``I've no idea if there will be any new faces for next season,'' he said. ``If there are, it will be on free transfers. There's no money for new players here. I know money doesn't guarantee success, but it helps.''

The former Sunderland boss - yesterday named Division Three manager of the month for April - will be looking to secure the services of most of his out-of-contract contingent, notably his strikeforce of 38-goal Andy Morrell and Lee Trundle. …
