James D. Smith of Elmhurst

Funeral services for James D. Smith, 80, formerly of West Chicago for 35 years, will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, at Visitation Catholic Church, corner of York Road and Madison St., Elmhurst. Born Oct. 17, 1922, in Greenwood, Wis., he died Saturday, May 10, 2003, at his home. Burial will be in the Lincoln Memorial Park Cemetery, Aurora. James was a B-17 pilot in the Army Air Force from 1943 to 1945, and attained the rank of major during his 20 years in the Air Force reserves. He earned a bachelor of science degree from Northern Illinois University, and a master of science degree form the University of Wisconsin. He was the chairman of the social studies department of West Chicago Community High School, where he taught from 1947 to 1982. He served on West Chicago's first Human Relations Commission, chaired the West Chicago Civil Service Commission for two years, and was a member of both the American Legion Post @#300 in West Chicago, and of Visitation Church, Elmhurst. …
