Learn about Youth Sports, Activities at Expo Sunday

Youth sports and activities will be on display for families at a free event from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at Charlestowne Mall in St. Charles.

The Youth Sports and Activities Expo will include 25 exhibits, games and activities on the main floor of the mall. Demonstrations featuring dancing, martial arts, cheerleading, skateboarding and biking will be given in the center court throughout the day.

The event is the first of its kind in the Tri-Cities, but is expected to draw more than 1,000 visitors, said Chris Cudworth, community marketing manager for the Daily Herald, event sponsor.

The Chicago Fire, the Kane County Cougars and the Radio Disney Party Patrol are among the exhibition sponsors that will have booths, including a speed pitching alley where youngsters can test their arms, a soccer speed kick and a climbing wall.

Delnor-Community Hospital in Geneva will host discussions on injury prevention and wellness for children in sports from noon to 1:00 p.m. at the Charlestowne 18 Cinema. Drs. Timothy S. Petsche and Laura M. Lemke, both of Fox Valley Orthopedics in Geneva, will present methods for treating the child athlete.

Devra Shiba, a registered and licensed dietitian who works at of Health World Children's Museum in Barrington, will lead an accompanying three-part series of discussions on sportsmanship. The program will include a 30-minute survey designed to facilitate discussion and educate families on moral and social issues of coaching, playing and managing youth sports. …
