NTC to Promulgate New Set of Guidelines for Cable Industry

The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) will soon issue new set of guidelines that will govern the cable industry to take into account issues raised by oppositors.

NTC Commissioner Armi Jane Borje said the agency is not closing its doors to changes in the proposed rules as it wants to come out with a new memorandum circular that is acceptable to all parties.

She pointed out that the Commission even gave the cable operators, content providers and other concerned parties until Friday next week to come up with their position papers regarding the proposed rules.

All we are concerned about here is the protection of our cable TV operators, consequently because we want to protect our consumers. We want to maintain the consumers right to choose, Borje said.

She added. We are not saying that these are the rules already. The fact that we gave them days to come up with their position papers, we are not against changing them.

Earlier, several controversial issues cropped up in the draft memorandum circular among them is the prohibition of exclusivity agreements and the requirements for local and foreign cable program providers to register with the NTC. …
