Nation Observes Nat'l Crime Prevention Week

The nationwide observance of National Crime Prevention Week formally kicked-off yesterday in simple ceremonies in Camp Crame.

Interior and Local Government Secretary Jose D. Lina Jr. and Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Hermogenes E. Ebdane Jr. led top government officials in the opening ceremony for the week-long nationwide celebration.

Presidential Proclamation No. 461 declared the first week of September of every year as National Crime Prevention Week.

Lina, also chairman of the National Police Commission (Napolcom), said this years National Crime Prevention Week is observed under the theme Payapang Pamayanan: Susi sa Kaunlaran.

Day One of the observance featured a Media Forum and Peoples Day activities in Camp Crame participated in by representatives from other agencies and NGOs.

According to the PNP Directorate for Police Community Relations (DPCR) office, the observance of National Crime Prevention Week is an opportunity to highlight the collective efforts of the agencies and institutions behind the five pillars of the countrys criminal justice system.

Most important among these efforts is the active support and participation of the community in crime prevention programs of government.

National Crime Prevention Week culminates with the augmentation of police visibility operations in shopping malls and commercial centers by the so-called force multipliers composed of barangay tanod, security guards, and anti-crime NGOs.

Activities lined up in observance of National Crime Prevention Week include a series of symposia on peace and order issues, photo exhibits and poster-making and essay writing contests for school children.

As the nation formally commenced the week-long observance of the 9th National Crime Prevention Week, Interior and Local Government Secretary Jose D. Lina Jr. yesterday announced the mobilization by the government of some 350,000 barangay tanods trained recently by the DILG in various aspects of police work to assist the police and military in the campaign against terrorism and criminality in the different barangays of the country. …
