MEPs 'Should Get More Decision Making Powers'

UUP MEP Jim Nicholson welcomed the statement by the NFU that it believes MEPs should play a greater part in the decision-making process in EU agricultural policy.

Speaking from Brussels yesterday Mr Nicholson said: "The European Parliament's Agriculture Committee has now matured sufficiently to take on a co-decision role with the European Council and European Commission.

"It would be a natural and logical step forward for the democratic process and would give us a stronger input than we have at present.

"Too often we have witnessed the scene where we have not been listened to and our views have not been taken on board. I am delighted that the NFU have made their views known and given us their support."

The National Farmers' Union of England and Wales had said it believed MEPs should play a greater part in the decision-making process in agriculture in Europe.

The proposal to give the European Parliament powers of co-decision in agricultural policy has been suggested as part of the high level discussions on developing an EU constitution.

NFU Council - the NFU's governing body - backed the proposed move when it met on Tuesday in London. …
