BRITAIN is on the verge of a recruitment revolution, thanks to the internet.

The e-commerce Bill published by the government in July has earmarked web-based businesses as the way ahead for British commerce.

The recruitment websites appearing in the UK have the potential to change radically the commercial landscape and the approach to finding a job.

Clients and candidates used to wading through cluttered networks of information on archaic databases can now use web technology to receive up-to-the-minute news on job vacancies.

The idea is to make the recruitment industry available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Brendon Voogt, 28, director of London-based Vardus, the developer of Internet Solutions and Netmove for the recruitment industry, says: 'We have seen a major increase in recruitment agencies implementing websites and the number of candidates using them over the past eight to 10 months.' Voogt believes that it is essential for recruitment agencies to take the net route to stay competitive.

'A few years ago, communication was all about the phone, fax and paper,' he says. 'These days, because technology is advancing at wn a job such a rate, we could see the whole recruitment process, including interviews, taking place over the world wide web.' Looking for a new job has never been easy, but things are changing.

As well as saving time and energy, applying for jobs online shows that a candidate is conversant with modern technology, which is increasingly important in today's workplace. Financial recruitment specialist Joslin Rowe Associates is the latest to launch a recruitment service.

The company entered into web-based technology in 1995 and has spent the past year developing a site to simplify the process of looking for a job.

Jeremy Tipper, 31, director of business development for the Blomfield Group, which comprises Joslin Rowe and Firth Ross Martin Associates, says: 'We have designed our website to be user-friendly so we can build good relationships with our candidates and clients.

'Our research has shown that in many cases, recruitment websites are not kept up-to-date.

'We believe there is no point launching this type of service if it is not up-to-the-minute, so we linked our in-house vacancy database to our website, ensuring that not only are all our positions live, but the site is updated several times a day.' Candidates can perform a vacancy search online and apply directly to the relevant consultant. …
