AN OFFICIAL Diana hallmark is being launched to approve 'tasteful' souvenirs.

It will normally run alongside the logo of her signature, which denotes that funds from the product are going to her memorial fund.

Guy Bigland, of solicitors Lawrence Graham acting for Diana's estate, said: 'There are a lot of companies, especially overseas, who are making a lot of money out of cheap unlicensed goods. We must act to stop this free-for-all.' The hallmark - a D symbol topped by a Spencer family coronet - denotes a product which has been approved by the executors of her estate on the grounds of 'taste and appropriateness'.

So far only a handful of products carry both logos. They include a scented candle made by Slatkin and Co of New York, a Waterford crystal bowl and an enamel box made by Halcyon Days of London.

Most other items already carrying the fund symbol will be given the hallmark retrospectively.

The joint announcement by Diana's charity trustees and estate comes days after controversy over the use of her signature on tubs of Flora margarine.

They would not be given a hallmark because the promotion for the London Marathon is purely for fundraising and is not intended to be any kind of memento, Mr Bigland said. …
