Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson could turn to an old friend to help the club steer a course past Porto in the Champions' League.

Former Old Trafford coach Carlos Queiroz is in charge of Real Madrid, who faced the Portuguese league leaders in the group stages.

The input of Portuguese coach Queiroz could be vital if United are to reach the quarter-finals. At that stage six years ago, they disposed of Porto 4-0 on a memorable night at Old Trafford.

United, who will have exciting young winger Ronaldo returning to his homeland, have not lost at home in the Champions' League for more than two years and will be favourites to progress.

Secretary Ken Merrett said: 'Sir Alex will be as happy as the Porto coach is with the draw as he wanted to play an English team.

'We now have a Portuguese player of course, Ronaldo and I am sure he will be looking forward to showing his skills if he gets chosen. …
