`THEY HAVE TURNED AGAINST ME'; Students Give Macleod Lesson in Calvinism

HARDLINE Calvinist students have allegedly turned against the Free Church of Scotland professor who was cleared of serious sex charges last week.

Professor Donald Macleod said he felt `hurt and bruised' that so many of his students at the Free Church College in Edinburgh had turned out to be hardliners who supported his accusers.

`It disturbs me, too, that it is not the most able and talented of the younger ones that are coming forward for the ministry,' said Prof Macleod, who has yet to decide if he will continue as professor of systematic theology.

At Edinburgh Sheriff Court last week, Prof Macleod, 55, was found not guilty of charges of sexual assault on four women between 1985 and 1991.

Sheriff John Horsburgh, QC, concluded that all the women who had made allegations against him had lied in the witness box to further the ends of the professor's enemies.

`I have little influence on the students, like other teachers, of course,' said Prof Macleod in an interview on BBC Scotland's Gaelic radio service yesterday. …
