In April we booked a fall cruise special from one of these lists, a seven-day cruise on Celebrity's ship Horizon, departing from Tampa on Oct. 31, including the ports of Grand Cayman, Cozumel, Costa Maya (a jungle-embraced, recently built "day resort" for cruise ships) and Key West. The price was an amazing $340 per person. For $30 extra each we upgraded to an outside cabin.

The online agency was Moment's Notice Online, at, which handled the booking efficiently. We arranged our own air fare through an airline site.

Once on board the Horizon in Tampa, we were expecting a fun but fairly modest experience, but instead were impressed with the size of the cabin, the friendly and attentive service of our cabin attendant and the waitstaff, the activities (from lectures on pirates to Broadway musicals contests) and the stunning special buffets. The cabin, on the quiet and steady Deck 9, had been configured as we requested, with two beds joined to make a big bed, and even though the window looked out on a lifeboat, we didn't mind as it still lent the room light. All in all, it was quite a pleasant cruise experience, and at a rock-bottom price.
