New Tools Help Business Owners Understand Employment Laws

WASHINGTON D.C. -- U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao has announced two new efforts to help employers understand how to comply with the U.S. Department of Labor's employment laws and regulations.

The two new "compliance assistance tools" are the FirstStep Employment Law Advisor and the Employment Law Guide.

"The [Department of Labor] has initiated a comprehensive program to reach out to employers and employees to educate them about our nation's employment laws," said Chao. "There is a new era of responsibility at the Department of Labor to help the regulated community understand these exhaustive rules and regulations."

The FirstStep Employment Law Advisor is a new e-tool available at that helps employers determine which laws administered by the DOL apply to their business or organization and provides easy-to-access information on how to comply with the laws' requirements. It is one of a series of several Employment Laws Assistance for Workers and Small Businesses (elaws) Advisors, which are online, interactive systems that provide information about selected DOL laws and regulations.

The FirstStep Advisor takes employers through a series of onlne questions to help them first determine which laws apply to their businesses or organizations, then links to information about how to comply With these laws.

Some Of these laws include the Family and Medical Leave Act, the Immigration and Nationality Act, the Contract Work Hours and Safety Standards Act and the Davis-Bacon and Related Acts. …
