PRESIDENTIAL hopeful John F Kerry was accused last night of a sex scandal.

The married senator had an affair with a young intern who once worked for the news agency Associated Press, according to a US website.

Bill Clinton was accused of an affair with an AP reporter in 1992 before he beat Republican George Bush senior in the race for the White House.

The claim proved to be unfounded, although six years later Clinton did admit to having an affair with another intern, Monica Lewinsky.

The claims against Kerry, who is the frontrunner to win the Democratic Party nomination to take on George W Bush in November, were made by Matt Drudge on his website.

The Drudge Report, which broke the Lewinsky story, alleged that the woman had since left the country at Kerry's instigation.

Earlier this week ex-Kerry rival General Wesley Clark said: "Kerry will implode over an intern issue."

But he went through with his decision to drop out of the race on Tuesday, then bizarrely announced last night that he would endorse Kerry for the Democratic nomination.

Frantic efforts were being made at the Kerry campaign HQ yesterday to contain the Drudge story. …
