Palatine-Schaumburg High School District 211 is preparing to host its eighth annual Peer Mediation/Conflict Resolution Conference.

The conference will run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 1 at Conant High School, 700 E. Cougar Trail in Hoffman Estates.

Students and sponsors from 24 schools throughout Illinois are scheduled for the conference, where they will participate in workshops for new and veteran mediators as well as peer mediation sponsors and school administrators.

New mediators will be involved in a full day of training, which is required to serve as peer mediators in schools. Veteran mediators will go to workshop sessions designed to reinforce basic skills, build advance techniques and provide opportunities to network with other mediators.

Hoffman Estates High School student services director and conference coordinator Julie Lockett said the conference provides students and staff with a unique opportunity to come together, not only to receive essential training, but also to share resources and support other's efforts in the area of conflict resolution.

District 211's mediation program was awarded the 1999 Peaceleaders Award from the Illinois Center for the Prevention of Violence for school based programs.
