RP Enhances Negotiating Capability in WTO

The Philippines has further enhanced its capability to negotiate for the countrys application and implementation of the rules and obligations of the World Trade Organization to effectively promote national interest in future trade talks with other WTO members, an official said yesterday.

The Department of Trade and Industry with other government agencies has just concluded a yearlong series of programs to improve the countrys participation in upcoming trade negotiations and the effective implementation of trade agreements covered under WTO.

"With the series of programs (concluded), it is expected that government officials as well as technical staff are now more equipped to carry out the challenging tasks of trade negotiations and advance the national economic interest at the WTO," DTI Undersecretary Thomas Aquino said.

He added that the government is "looking forward to a meaningful participation in future trade negotiations," after completing the WTO CapacityBuilding Program recently, which was funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) through a technical assistance.

The series of activities, started last year, involved various areas of WTO procedures which government agencies needed to understand to enhance the capability to better understand the trade groupings rules, obligations and agreements. The training also included briefings on domestic laws and regulations with WTO-covered agreements and procedural facts on the implementation of WTO deals. …
