PC Who Is Hooked on Ancient Rome; JOHN LOOKING FOR HELP TO PUBLISH FICTIONAL ACCOUNT OF SOLDIER

A COVENTRY policeman is looking for help to get a book published after taking a career break to devote more time to his first love - the Romans.

PC John Waite, 40, who worked in the city centre sector in Coventry, decided to take time out in December last year after 12 years in uniform.

As well as researching and writing about the Roman era, Mr Waite, who was behind the city centre high visibility policing scheme, also re-enacts battles as part of his obsession.

The father of one, who lives in Bedworth with his wife Helen, also a police officer, said it took five months to write the 95,000-word book.

Called Legionary - A Call To Arms, it charts the life of a young soldier joining the army and then invading Europe in 43AD.

Mr Waite, a member of the Roman Military Research Society, said: "As a young child, there was not a lot to do apart from watch TV and it was watching films such as Ben Hur and Spartacus that started my interest and I have been hooked since then.

"My house is decorated in a Roman style and I just find everything about the Romans fascinating. …
