WIRRAL is one of the safest places in the country to be treated in hospital, according to health service inspectors.

The Wirral Hospitals NHS trust, incorporating Arrowe Park and Clatterbridge, has become one of the first in England to meet rigorous tests on patient care.

It is the largest of just six hospital trusts to be awarded Level 3 in the clinical negligence scheme - the highest level of achievement.

As well as reassuring patients they are receiving the highest standards of care, the ranking means Wirral trust's contribution to the national insurance scheme, which funds the cost of clinical negligence litigation on behalf of the NHS,is reduced.

Frank Burns, chief executive of the trust, said:``Achievement of Level 3 is the culmination of almost four years'hard work by staff right across the trust.

``Many have been directly involved in the thorough CNST assessment, but all have played a part,in some way,in enhancing the clinical standards and care.

``This is excellent news for the people of Wirral whom we serve, who can be assured that we are doing all we can to provide a safe and effective service.''

It follows an in-depth assessment by NHS inspectors earlier this year. …
