GREECE coach Otto Rehhagel has been hailed a hero in his native Germany.

Their national team may have made an early exit but the country's media were quick to heap praise on the man who groomed the shock winners.

Rehhagel has a great coaching record in the Bundesliga and he is now being tipped to succeed Rudi Voller as Germany coach.

Tabloid paper Bild carried a picture of Rehhagel wearing a crown against a background of Greek fans celebrating.

And Die Welt was quick to point out that Angelos Charisteas, who scored the winner against Portugal, plays for Werder Bremen.

Rehhagel and his players won praise across Europe.French daily Le Parisien described the team as heroes of modern mythology while L'Equipe branded their 1-0 victory one of the greatest surprises in the history of football.

Le Monde said the winners were perfectly organised but sympathised with young Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo who was in tears at the final whistle. …
