Leukemia, lymphoma, lupus, thalassemia, aplastic anemia, hemophilia these are but some of deadly blood-related or hematologic disorders that Filipinos practically know nothing about until they become afflicted with them. And for the majority of victims who are poor, discovery of the affliction comes too late.

It is in response to this situation that a group of medical practitioners and scientists working in various hospitals in Manila and the provinces continues to operate primarily to raise public awareness about blood diseases and to update members on the latest in the art and science of hematology and blood transfusion.

Established in 1960 by a group of blood doctors and blood bankers, the Philippine Society of Hematology and Blood Transfusion (PSHBT) has been at the forefront of developing and upgrading the capability of local physicians and other medical professionals in diagnosing and treating hematologic diseases.

PSHBTs 34th Annual Convention will be held on Sept. 8-10, at the Isla Ballroom of Edsa Shangri-La Hotel in Mandaluyong City. …
