Cerdd dant literally translates as ``tooth music'' but the teeth to which the term refers are the strings ofEFORE most of the great European composers and poets were even born, Welsh bards and musicians were fusing words and music in a highly sophisticated and complicated style.

Cerdd dant is a unique art which has its roots in the oral traditions of medieval storytellers yet has survived over centuries of change and been passed down the generations.

These storytellers were hired by the wealthy to entertain and flatter them with poetry and music and from their skills grew the complex cerdd dant, a music completely different to anything any other nation has ever produced.

The traditional art is for a poem to be presented through singing the words to one tune while being accompanied by the harp which plays another tune. There are strict rules to be adhered to and the meaning of the words is an important factor in presentation.

And this weekend sees cerdd dant take centre stage on S4C with extensive coverage of the annual Cerdd Dant Festival held this year at the North Wales Theatre, Llandudno.

Presenting the coverage will be Nia Roberts and Hywel Gwynfryn joined by a panel of experts including Guto Puw, Leah Owen, Gwennant Pyrs, Edward Elias and Sian Teifi. …
