Tungsten T5 Handheld and Treo 650 Smartphone: New Features Help Administrators, Educators and Students Connect to Information and People

Article excerpt

THE NEW Tungsten T5 handheld and Treo 650 smartphone introduced this fall offer features sure to fit the bill for students, teachers and school administrators.

The Tungsten T5 handheld with 256MB of flash memory enables students and teachers to carry more information and applications, and access data folders and files whenever and wherever they need them. The Treo 650's seamless combination of mobile phone, email, organizer, Web browser and messaging makes it easier than ever for administrators to stay connected to people and information on and off campus.

"Students, teachers and administrators have very different needs and these new products address them," says Mike Lorion, vice president of vertical markets at palmOne. "Educators and students routinely carry stacks of papers and files from campus to home and back; the Tungsten T5's storage capacity lets them take what they need on the handheld and leave the laptop safely locked in a school office or classroom. Administrators need a powerful device like the Treo 650 smartphone that helps them be more productive, able to easily access information and stay in touch as they deal with routine school business or unexpected events."

Tungsten T5 More storage easy access

There's no shortage of space on the new Tungsten T5 handheld computer. With 256MB of flash memory, it nearly doubles the industry's current handheld storage maximum. It also serves as a portable flash memory drive. Flash memory provides easy and safe data storage because it holds information even when the battery wanes. Recharge the handheld and the data is there.

The Tungsten T5's ample internal memory excels at storing multimedia content. Photos, music and videos can all be played or displayed on this handheld--with visuals quite stunning on its 320x480 color screen. Further, one can view the screen in either portrait of landscape mode. Useful in hundreds of ways, a new Files application highlights this feature by neatly displaying folders and files in either mode.

On a Tungsten T5, teachers and students have even speedier access to their data folders and files--whenever and wherever they need them. A new File Transfer application lets them 'drag and drop' files and folders from the desktop to the handheld. Also new is a Favorites view that makes it a snap to sort and organize school business, curriculum and personal information.

Like other palmOne handhelds, the Tungsten T5 loaded with Documents To Go from DataViz Technologies (www.dataviz.com) gives educators and students the ability to create and edit Microsoft Word- and Excel-compatible files, and to view PowerPoint files.

A robust Intel 416MHz XScale processor provides plenty of power for the Tungsten T5. Built-in Bluetooth wireless technology lets staff of students perform a HotSync operation to a laptop computer or connect it to a Bluetooth-compatible cellphone. With its slim and sleek design, the new T5 fits easily into a loose pocket or purse. It also features the Multi-connector, a new common connector for palmOne products. The Tungsten T5 handheld has an estimated U.S. street price of $399.

Treo 650 Connected and in touch

The Treo 650 smartphone gives administrators and teachers everything they need to stay connected and in control by combining a compact, full-featured mobile phone with email, an organizer, messaging and Web access.

Beginning with carriers in the United States, the Treo 650 will be available as either a digital dual-banal CDMA/1xRTT or a GSM/GPRS/EDGE quad-band world phone, with pricing to be set by individual carriers. Availability in the U.S. is expected late this year, with worldwide rollout to follow in 2005.

The Treo 650 smartphone looks and feels like a cellphone, but it's definitely a whole lot more. With Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, Memos and more, the Treo 650 lets administrators and teachers organize and simplify their school and personal lives all in one place. …
