Article excerpt

THE new Colt range received more than a few admiring glances when it first went on show.

And it's the three door version of this car which is the newest from this marque to appear in UK showrooms. In fact its February arrival was well timed for the March new registration.

Prices start from around pounds 7,500 for the entry level 1.1-litre rising to pounds 10,250 for the 1.5-litre diesel Equippe and pounds 13,000 for the sporting flagship, the 147bhp Colt CZT.

The cars share the same wheelbase and track as the five-door models, a range which has been described as a cross between a conventional supermini and a small MPV.

The Mitsubishi range is wide and varied and some of its models have certainly stretched the design barriers.

The Grandis, for example, is a five- door people carrier with a difference. It is a full seven-seater but in a far more compact form. It is also the sportiest and most futuristic looking MPV to hit the road for some time.

The Outlander station wagon, too, is certainly a car to get you noticed in, with its distinctive front and high stance. Prices start at pounds 16,000.

But Mitsubishi is still best known for its 4x4 go-anywhere Shogun models, available as Shogun Pinin, Shogun Sport and just Shogun. Prices from pounds 12,800 for the Pinin up to pounds 32,000 for the 3.5-litre V6 Shogun Elegance.

Packed with equipment and with prices almost in the bargain basement, the new Lancer is poised to deliver a knockout blow.

Air conditioning, alloy wheels, front fog lamps, CD player and remote control central locking are standard across the range, as are electrically adjustable and heated door mirrors.

So is metallic paint, electric windows front and rear, front and side airbags, ABS and ISO-fix child seat anchor points.

But the most remarkable feature is that the Lancer range starts at pounds 9,999 for a 1.6-litre saloon.

That is more than pounds 3,000 cheaper than a similarly engined Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra or Toyota Corolla - and it comes with more equipment. …
