Naperville Hires New Director of Public Works Area Man Billed as Municipal Jack-of-All-Trades

David Van Vooren has done a little bit of everything during his municipal government career.

Now the civic renaissance man will bring his talents to Naperville to lead the public works department.

"Short of a handful of communities in the country, Naperville is one of the finest residential communities in the United States," he said. "It has a tremendous reputation for its service and employees, and I want to be a part."

Currently Downers Grove's assistant village manager, Van Vooren has served communities downstate in various capacities, was Plainfield's village administrator from 1991 to 1996 and held several positions in Willowbrook, including public works director.

"He has a very serious and thoughtful dedication to public works and local government," said Naperville City Manager Peter Burchard. "Dave has a very solid set of skills when it comes to finance, planning and working front line services."

Van Vooren has a master's degree from Eastern Illinois University in business administration, as well as two bachelor's degrees from the institution with emphasis on finance and economics.

He replaces Ed Gifford, who retired in November after 15 years with the city. …
