Australians Up Next for RP Training Team

COACH CHOT Reyes and his 21-man Philippine training pool team are bracing for a real battle ahead.

The three-time and reigning National Basketball League (NBL) champion Trendwest Sydney Kings are coming to town and will play the Nationals in two tune-up games on May 9 and 10.

Reyes admits his two RP squads San MigCoffee-Team A and Purefoods Sugar Cane Vinegar-Team B will have their hands full against the Aussies, mentored by Australian national coach Brian Goorjian and powered by the core of the Kings team that swept the Wollongong Hawks in the best-of-five finals their third straight NBL championship.

"The Sydney Kings are definitely a strong team," said Reyes,who plans to shuffle the roster of both San Mig Coffee and Purefoods Sugar cane Vinegar squads during the two-day affair.

The Nationals are coming off a two-game sweep of an Iranian team, reinforced by five members of its national squad, just a week ago in the first of a series of outings as part of their preparations for apair of international meets to be held later this year.

Unlike the Iranians, the locals are expected to face rough sailings against the Aussies.

Goorjian, considered one of the best defensives coaches in the world today, is a four-time NBL Coach of the Year awardee and the architect of the Kings three straight NBL titles, the only ball club to achieve the feat in the 27-year history of the league. …
