Thomas Putman

The funeral will be May 13 for Thomas Putman of Eugene, who died May 9 of age-related causes. He was 77.

He was born Jan. 21, 1928, in Springfield, to Lee and Clarine Barker Putman. He married Audrey Harper on June 5, 1948, in Elmira. She died Jan. 17, 1989. He married Ruby Lloyd on Sept. 7, 1991, in Eugene.

A graduate of Junction City High School, he graduated from Oregon College of Education in Monmouth. He worked for 34 years as a teacher and principal.

He enjoyed cooking, gardening and traveling in his RV. He was a member of the Eugene Elks Club No. 357, the Bethel Lions Club and the Ore-Lane Roamers Camping Club.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Merrie Prissing of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Marla Herrera of Eugene; a stepdaughter, Faye Young of Eugene; a stepson, Kirk Lloyd of Eugene; a sister, Ila Venator of Eugene; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Musgrove Family Mortuary in Eugene. Friday's service will be at 10 a.m. at Irving Christian Church in Eugene, with burial to follow at Rest Haven Memorial Park in Eugene.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, the American Cancer Society and/or the American Heart Association.

Sandra Young

REEDSPORT - Sandra J Tallman Young of Reedsport, formerly of Florence and North Bend, died May 5. She was 61. The family chose not to list the cause of death. At her request, no public services are planned.

Young was born June 18, 1943, in Ellis County, Kan., to Paul and Wava Tallman. She married David Young on Sept. 5, 1964, in Florence.

She moved to Florence when she was 12 and graduated in 1962 from Siuslaw High School. She later moved to the North Bend area, where she raised her children. She retired and moved back to Florence, then moved to Reedsport.

She enjoyed cooking, canning, gardening, running, reading and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, and her friends. Her family said she was a remarkable homemaker.

Survivors include her husband; a son, Jason of Eugene; a daughter, Jessica Kersey of Portland; her mother, of Junction City; a sister, Pauline Austin of Eugene; and four grandchildren.

A private celebration of life will be held later. Dunes Memorial Chapel in Reedsport is in charge of arrangements.

Thomas Emmens

ELMIRA - Thomas Alfred Emmens of Elmira died May 7 of cancer. He was 62.

He was born May 18, 1942, in Medford, to Robert and Justine Miller Emmens. He married Conni Loomis on June 29, 2001, in Florence.

He had lived in the Eugene area for 47 years. He previously lived in many places, including Medford; Bucharest, Romania; Arlington, Va.; Salzburg, Austria; Langley Air Force Base in Virginia; Myrtle Beach, S.C.; Tokyo and New York City.

He moved to Eugene in 1958. He received master's degrees in political science and Asian studies from the University of Oregon and had worked toward a doctoral degree at the University of Oregon and Columbia University.

He worked as a granola maker at the Yellow Submarine commune in Eugene in the 1960s and was a truck driver for Springfield Creamery in the 1970s. He worked as a tree planter for many years for Hoedads, Rolling Rock and Skookum and was a part owner of D.S. & T. He also worked for Agripac and later was a dispatcher for Skookum.

Emmens enjoyed history, photography, writing, reading and conservation. He belonged to the Oregon Historical Society, the Southern Oregon Historical Society and Phi Beta Kappa.

Survivors include his wife; his mother of Medford; a brother, Michael of Medford; and a sister, Robin of Jacksonville.

A memorial service and scattering of ashes is planned in June. …
