Benet, Redhawks, Huskies Share Sectional Glory Redwings' Roth, Martin Go 1-2 at Singles

There was plenty of glory to go around at Saturday's Naperville North boys tennis sectional.

- Benet, with Connor Roth and Jack Martin finishing one-two at singles, took the team championship for the second year in a row, by a 1-point margin over Naperville Central.

- Naperville North, whose doubles teams have gotten a lot of attention this year, sent both on to state, including the duo of Ben Hirsh and Christer Kemna, who won the sectional doubles title. The Huskies finished third with 14 points.

- DuPage Valley Conference champion and sectional runner-up Naperville Central qualified both doubles teams and a singles player for this week's state tournament.

- Freshman Pat Clark of fourth-place Glenbard South (7 points) came in third at singles, and broke the Benet/Naperville stranglehold on state qualification.

"The sectional championship is a great win for the kids to put on their resumes," said Benet coach Michael Hand. "They worked hard all season. The one slight drawback is that, unlike last year, we needed a lot of help from others who beat Naperville Central in the last few matches, to give us the margin of victory."

Roth's sectional win was a tuneup for an anticipated deep run in the state tournament.

"I'm hoping for a three/four seed," Roth said. "I've been working on improving my forehand and a strong first serve on big points. Jack Martin gives our team another strong player at state."

Hirsh and Kemna have been improving steadily throughout the season, and they're looking for a top-16 finish at state after taking the sectional championship with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Tyler Hoffman and Jordan Williams of Naperville Central in the finals. …
