Riding into the Record Books; CYCLES BUSINESS KEPT IN THE FAMILY FOR 100 YEARS

FOUR generations of staff at a city shop are celebrating a record during a very special centenary this year.

One of the leading lights in the region's cycling business, Scotts Cycles, is the only bike shop in England that has been in the same family for the past 100 years.

Peter, the fourth generation of the Scott family, and his brother Graeme, are both still running the two family shops in Hall Green and Rubery.

And it looks as if the Scott dynasty could continue as Peter's son Anthony is already building bikes even though he's only eight.

The business was started by Peter and Graeme's great-grandfather John Scott in 1905, when he opened the family's first shop in Whitechapel Lane, Bordesley Green.

The Scotts went on to run five shops across the city. The Coventry Road branch fell victim to Birmingham Bertha in 1931 when the city's famous tornado ripped off the roof.

Peter's dad John, 63, still helps out at both shops doing the books and carrying out repairs. 'We've survived because we've moved with the times,' said John, at the Stratford Road shop' The lads have kept up with the changing world of cycles. …
