RANGERS have launched a [pounds sterling]1million bid for Monaco defender Julien Rodriguez - and demanded an answer before close of business tonight.

Rodriguez, a close friend of Ibrox striker Dado Prso, has been identified as a potential solution to Alex McLeish's concerns in central defence.

He was a mainstay of the Monaco side which reached the 2004 Champions League Final, but is now ready to end his nine-year stay on the CUte d'Azur in order to seek a fresh challenge in Scotland.

And, with the Champions League signing deadline looming on Thursday night, the SPL champions are eager to conclude a deal within the next 24 hours.

Chief executive Martin Bain is in Monaco and on standby to open personal negotiations on a fouryear contract with the 27-year-old, should Monaco accept the bid.

Monaco coach Didier Deschamps selected Rodriguez in every game as his side - with Prso among their number - reached the Champions League Final against Porto 15 months ago.

But the long-serving central defender was listed only on the bench for the 1-0 win away to newlypromoted Nancy when the new French league season opened at the weekend. …
