Words Worth Pounds 5m; Languages Translate into Jobs and Cash

A NEW association representing a multi-million pound industry in Wales is working to make sure nothing is lost in translation.

Translation for Business Wales/Cyfieithu i Fusnes Cymru has been set up for translators working in any combination of languages.

The new organisation brings together businesses in Wales ranging from individual professional translators and interpreters to translation companies working in a wide range of world languages from Arabic to Zulu.

Some of the businesses can adapt a text to another country's culture and context - important for international marketing and advertising - website translation and cultural awareness.

North and mid Wales branches of the new association are already up and running, and a third branch was recently launched in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Association chairman Peter Barber said there were about 130 companies working in the field, about 50 of them in North and mid Wales. A fifth of them had so far joined the newly formed association.

He said: "Primarily our focus is translation work for industry and commerce but we also do a lot of work for governments and institutions in Europe as well as the more personal type of work such as translating letters.

"We estimate that translation businesses bring an income of about pounds 5m into Wales from England and other parts of Europe. …
