THE United Arab Emirates (UAE) marks its 35th Anniversary of Independence today.

The UAE is a country in the Middle East composed of the emirates of Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujairah, Ras al-Khaimah, Sharjah, and Umm alQuwain. About 15 to 20 percent of its total population of 4.041 million are UAE citizens. The rest include significant numbers of other Arabs - Palestinians, Egyptians, Jordanians, Yemenis, Omanis - as well as many Iranians, Pakistanis, Indians, Bangladeshis, Afghanis, West Europeans, and Filipinos.

Migrant workers, either unskilled or skilled, comprise a large portion of UAE's workforce, and many of them are Filipinos. Statistics on labor force participation in year 2000 show that 78 percent were in services i.e., government, trade, real estate, 15 percent in industry, and 7 percent in agriculture.

In 2005, the UAE's oil reserves and natural gas outputs accounted for around 30 percent of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Its per capita GDP is comparable with those of leading West European nations. Modern foreign policy and the country's rich oil reserves have enabled the UAE to play a significant role in the affairs of the region. …
