Electronic Firms Eye New Business; as ASEAN Market Research Center for EMS, ODM

Philippine electronics manufacturing firms are eyeing to become ASEAN's market research center to the growing electronic manufacturing service (EMS) and original design manufacturing (ODM) industry, the market of which is expected to reach $ 328.4 billion by 2010.

"The Philippines is well positioned to take advantage of the growth in EMS and original design manufacturing. We have talented engineers and our electronics companies are able to protect intellectual property, as well as meet their clients' time-to-market objectives," said Trade and Industry Secretary Peter Favila.

The Philippines is the country coordinator for the electronics sector, one of the 11 Priority Integration Sectors.

The Philippines is now the hub of various global electronics assembly and test facilities for including Intel, Texas Instruments, and NXP (former Philips) host assembly and test facilities for microprocessors and digital signal processors (DSPs).

The Philippines produces 100 percent of Nokia's digital signal processors and 80 percent of Siemen's and Ericsson's.

In the ASEAN Electronics Business Opportunities Exhibition and Conference (AE-BOEC), 20 companies showcases parts, materials and products they intend to procure from Asean suppliers.

AEBOEC is organized by the Department of Trade and Industry's export promotion arm, the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), the Board of Investments (BoI), and the Semiconductor Industries Association in the Philippines (SEIPI).

"We expect to develop new contacts in ASEAN for the raw materials that we use for our processes, such as active and passive parts/ICs, plastic parts, metal parts, flexible printed circuits, multilayer PCBs, and machining parts, "according to Frederick L.
