AUSTRALIA celebrates its National Day today.

Australia-Philippines relations have always been friendly and mutually beneficial, especially because of their common membership in and contributions to the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC). Trade, education exchange, and investment have been active between the two countries. Last March, in commemoration of the 60th Anniversary of Philippines-Australia diplomatic relations, a photo exhibit on friendship and cooperation between the two countries was held in Manila.

Australia continues to play a significant role in building Philippine agencies' capacity to respond to emergencies and disasters. In the aftermath of the landslide in St. Bernard, Southern Leyte, in February, 2006, a Disaster Preparedness and Hazard Mapping program was initiated through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the National Disaster Coordinating Council. Australia contributed R97.5 million to the project and is discussing with UNDP the acceleration of hazard mapping for the Bicol region.

Australia and the Philippines are close regional partners and share an interest in reducing poverty and attaining sustainable development in the Philippines. …
