SM Mall of Asia Offered as Site of PBA Stadium

TAIPAN HENRY Sy, owner of mall chain SM department stores, has thrown his hat into the bidding ring for the planned PBA Coliseum by offering a vast vacant lot in the reclaimed area beside the sprawling SM Mall of Asia along Roxas Boulevard.

From a slugfest between Quezon City, which has offered the vacant lot beside the Manila Seedling Bank at the corner of EDSA and Quezon Avenue, and Taguig, which dangled an area within the ultra modern Global City in Fort Bonifacio, SM has turned the battle into three-way fight, with some PBA officials immediately tantalized by the possibility.

"People from SM Mall of Asia have talked to us and their proposal is currently also being taken into consideration," said PBA Commissioner Noli Eala. "They said they are also building an arena and they proposed to make it a joint venture between them and the PBA."

Built on a 19.5-hectare of reclaimed land in Pasay City with a gross floor area of 386,224 square meters, the SM Mall of Asia is the third largest shopping mall in the world, making it a prime candidate for a PBA contract since it can easily accommodate a venue capable of sitting at least 10,000 people, the target audience for the projected state-of-the-art arena. …
