Want to split a geode and discover what's inside?

The Earth Science Club of Northern Illinois offers that opportunity with its annual Gem, Mineral and Fossil show from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday in Room 2800 of the Student Resource Center at the College of DuPage, 425 Fawell Blvd., Glen Ellyn.

Don Cronauer of Naperville will be demonstrating his silver jewelry making skills. He's been a member of the club for about 20 years and got hooked at one of these events.

"I was taking jewelry classes at COD and they asked me to demonstrate at the show," he said. "I've been a member ever since."

Cronauer will be showing his techniques to create rings and pendants, as well as how to choose stones and mount and carve them. Another art he said would be demonstrated is beading necklaces.

Along with the jewelry arts, the event attracts fossil fans, mineral buffs and bargain hunters for the silent and live auctions and used book sale.

There's always a crowd from the club's membership of 230 of all ages, including families.

The kids' corner offers a grab bag of hundreds of specimens and a spinning wheel to win items. Cronauer said the club also offers activities and trips for the Junior Group, which has members ages 10 and older. …
