EVER the flamboyant showman, Elton John has never done things by halves.

And he intends to mark his 60th birthday this weekend in his own inimitable style. Tonight he's hosting a celebrity-filled party in New York, while tomorrow, on the big day itself, he's playing Madison Square Garden.

His birthday bash - which has been two years in the planning - is bound to be a night to remember.

The guest-list is so big and starry that, according to US reports, A-list celebs have "commandeered every limousine in the city" to get to the do at the awesome Cathedral Church of St John the Divine (complete with stained-glass windows).

Guests will include his old mate Rod Stewart, Naomi Campbell, Sharon Stone, Liz Hurley and Sharon Osbourne. It's hoped that Posh and Becks, Macca and Madonna are able to attend, too. And there's rumours of a striptease by Robbie Williams.

Let's hope he doesn't stay out too late - he's on stage the next day for his 60th performance at Madison Square Garden. Elton is expected to open the record-breaking sell-out show, which will be televised on ITV next Thursday, with 60 Years On.

So here, to honour the birthday boy's legendary career and thank him for keeping us entertained with his wacky wardrobe, we look back at some of the special moments from his amazing life. …
