COMING away on international duty is proving to be a welcome distraction for Aaron Hughes.

The Northern Ireland captain is always proud to play for his country but he has an added incentive to perform well in the back-to-back Euro 2008 qualifiers against Liechenstein and Sweden.

The defender is having a frustrating season at Aston Villa and has dropped out of Martin O'Neill's plans making only a handful of starts in the last few months.

"It's always nice to come away on international trips because it breaks up the season and it's great to join up with the lads again but it's particularly good for me this time," revealed the defender.

"It's a frustrating time for me at Villa but it's just one of those things. There is not a lot I can do about it.

"I do the same work as always and just keep my head down and I'll try to get a game or two before the end of the season.

"If I don't manage it then it won't be for the want of trying that's for sure.

"But I've been looking forward to these two games and they'll be good for me to get to play in competitive matches."

Tonight's opponents are not a team Hughes confesses to know an awful lot about but he believes the key to victory is for Northern Ireland to do a professional job. …
