How long has it been since you were last on stage?

This original band line-up - me, Paul Humphreys, Martin Cooper and Malcolm Holmes - hasn't been on stage for almost 19 years.

Paul and I did a tour in Germany in December; previous to that I hadn't sung live for 13 years. We were a little nervous but it all came back to us. We have 36 gigs all over Europe planned now.

Why have you waited till now?

When I packed in OMD, I was banging my head against a brick wall being perceived as an 80s synth pop band at the height of Britpop.

One of the reasons I retired was to spend more time with my kids. But James is now 11 and Ava is seven and they are encouraging me back on the road, having never seen their dad perform on stage.

You and Paul famously fell out - how do you get along now?

We had to decide who was going to get custody of the name and I had to buy his share of it. But we were always too polite to really fall out, so we remained friends. It wasn't like we had some big hatchet-burying exercise to undertake. …
