THE United Republic of Tanzania celebrates its National Day today. This country is located in southeastern Africa, bounded on the north by Kenya and Uganda, on the east by the Indian Ocean, on the south by Mozambique, Malawi, and Zambia, and on the west by Zaire, Burundi, and Rwanda. The country includes the island of Zanzibar and Pemba and other offshore islands in the Indian Ocean, making it the biggest country in East Africa.

Because of distance, the relationship between the Philippines and Tanzania has yet to be enhanced. As raw material exporters, they have a common interest in improving the terms of trade with industrialized countries. The Philippines can offer technical assistance, while mineral-rich Tanzania can extend concessionary prices for its exports.

The Republic of Tanganyika in East Africa and the Republic of Zanzibar, off the coast of Tanganyika, both of which had recently gained independence, combined themselves into a single nation, the United Republic of Tanzania, on April 26, 1964, with Zanzibar retaining internal self-government.
