Ex-IBP Head Lauds New Supreme Court Justice's Appointment

Former Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) President Jose Vicente B. Salazar joined in the expressions of support for the appointment of Justice Ruben T. Reyes to the Supreme Court (SC), saying the former presiding justice of the Court of Appeals brings with him a wealth of wisdom and experience to the high court.

"President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's appointment of Justice Reyes is well placed as Reyes underwent the usual clinical scrutiny of the Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) which is made up of legal luminaries who took cognizance of the depth of knowledge and competence in the judiciary of Justice Reyes," Salazar said.

An indispensable requirement for a seat in the SC is the approval of the JBC and Justice Reyes was nominated a total of six times. "It is a well-deserved and long-in-coming appointment," Salazar added.

Justice Reyes is a career jurist. After 10 years as a private and corporate practitioner, he served as a bemedalled assistant city fiscal of Manila for nine years, an outstanding RTC judge of Bataan and Manila for 10 years, and a multi-awarded Appellate Justice for 13 years.

In good health at age 68, Justice Reyes maintained low pending caseloads and zero balance in criminal cases. …
