Leadership Race in ANC: NUM Intends Using Influence

COSATU'S biggest union, the National Union of Mineworkers, says it will use its weight to try and influence the ANC's leadership race and come up with names if asked to do so.

The statement comes as Cosatu affiliates prepare for the trade union federation's central committee meeting to be held in Johannesburg next week.

Cosatu this week said it would provide a list of candidates whom it would attempt to lobby support for in the run-up to the ANC national elective conference in December.

NUM said while it did not have a formal list of names, coming up with suitable candidates would not be a problem.

It denied that it was already backing certain individuals.

"We do not have a list precisely because throughout history the ANC has been able to resolve its problems," NUM spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka said yesterday.

He said delegates who would attend next week's Cosatu gathering were branch leaders who knew what their members wanted.

Seshoka said NUM would try to influence the outcome of the ANC leadership race just as the ANC influenced the leadership contests of its alliance partners. …
