State announces awards for best wellness policies

State schools Superintendent Susan Castillo announced last week that the state Department of Education will recognize schools that effectively implement their district's wellness policy to promote student health. Recipients of the Oregon School Wellness Awards will receive a cash prize, certificate of recognition and banner, and will serve as an example for the entire state. Criteria for selection will include whether the school has implemented each required element of the policy; whether it has demonstrated innovation or creativity in implementing components of the policy; whether the school has a detailed plan for ongoing monitoring and evaluation of the policy; and whether the school is identifying areas for improvement on an ongoing basis.

The application deadline is 5 p.m. on Jan. 15, 2008.

Mount Pisgah Arboretum invites students for tours
