AN awards ceremony honouring the cream of the Welsh commercial property sector today unveils finalists in five categories.

People in Property: Props Awards Wales 2007, in association with the Variety Club children's charity, will be held at a luncheon event at Cardiff City Hall on February 8 and will feature eight categories, along with a lifetime achievement award Comedian Tom O'Connor will once again host an awards luncheon attended by more than 450 property professionals.

Property Lawyer of the Year, sponsored by Davis Langdon

Paul Jones, left, - Hek Jones Mr Jones is head of the commercial property team at Hek Jones. In 2007 he refinanced the majority of the OHC group portfolio, a pounds 25m deal, yet completed in just over three weeks. He was responsible for putting together a tender to supply legal services to Edward Ware Homes, covering both site acquisition and plot sales.

Helen Thomas - Capital Law Ms Thomas is partner and head of property at Capital Law. The past year brought a lot of regeneration work her way and the highlight in terms of size and profile was acting for Associated British Ports in the pounds 53msale of the brown field Barry Waterfront site.

Other notable projects include the residential element of the St David's 2 development for the St David's Partnership and the pounds 23m disposal of the former David Morgan site for Helical Bar and Denham Homes.

Aside from various other projects, Ms Thomas has also been able to find an appropriate, workable balance between home and work life, having returned to work this year after her second child.

Nefydd Jones - Eversheds Mr Jones has been instructed by a wide range of clients in the real estate sector in 2007, many of which he has represented for a number of years.

The list of clients he has been involved with last year was extensive, however, significant achievements include being appointed to the panel of lawyers acting for Ericsson Ltd, the disposal of the Panasonic manufacturing facility in Baglan and advising the Welsh Assembly Government on many significant transactions, including the establishment of the Pencoed Technology Park, near Bridgend.

Mr Jones has also led a team of lawyers in the acquisition of pounds 270mworth of investment property across Britain over the last 16 months for a corporate pension fund.

Peter Hurn - Hugh James Mr Hurn became a partner at Hugh James on the May 1, 2007 and on the same day was appointed lead solicitor for a consortium of Taylor Wimpey, Persimmon Homes and Barratt Homes on the pounds 53m acquisition of the 41-hectare Barry Waterfront site.

Other notable transactions this year include acting for Ffos Las Ltd in connection with the new racecourse and centre for equestrian excellence in Carmarthenshire and acting for Gardeners, one of the world's leading largeformat digital printers on the acquisition of two factories.

Residential Developer of the Year, sponsored by Principality Building Society

Peter Thomas - Redrow South Wales Mr Thomas is land director for Redrow Homes (South Wales) with responsibility for securing land and development opportunities.

In 2007, Redrow ventured west of Swansea for the first time and secured three newdevelopment sites in Pontarddulais, Llanelli and Cross Hands. Other notable achievements include the commencement of Alexandra Gate - 400 riverfront apartments on the former Black Clawson site in Newport and completion of the Celestia development in Cardiff Bay - 600 apartments, all of which have been sold.

Gareth Hawke - Barratt South Wales Mr Hawke is the senior land manager for Barratt South Wales and has been instrumental in one of the busiest years that Barratt has known in the region, with the drive to move from 500 plots per annum to more than a thousand, breaking a series of company records.

His task as department head has been to ensure that the team has delivered on every aspect of their role in the business, from land offers and contracts to planning permissions and site completions. …
