US Commits Support for RP Drive against Trafficking of Persons

BATANGAS CITY -- The US State Department has committed support for the efforts of the national and local governments to stop the illegal trafficking of persons in this part of the country.

US Ambassador Kristie A. Kenney aired the assurance during her recent visit to the Batangas International Port (BIP) here where she was a guest at a special conference organized to strengthen the provincial anti-human trafficking network (AHTN).

The conference was held at the BIP Bahay Silungan sa Daungan, a halfway house for victims of human trafficking.

In brief ceremonies, Ambassador Kenney signed a memorandum of agreement with Visayan Forum, a non-government foundation working in the service of marginal migrants, on the AHTN activities and operations of the Bahay Silungan sa Daungan.

Visayan Forum president Ma. Cecil Flores-Oebanda lauded Ambassador Kenney, saying her government's support will assure major gains in the antihuman trafficking initiatives.

Gov. Vilma Santos-Recto led local officials in welcoming the American ambassador who also witnessed the launching of Batangas Provincial Interagency Council Against Trafficking of Persons (IACATP).

The lady governor said the provincial government had appropriated sufficient funds for the operations of the council. …
