WOULD-BE opticians in Scotland can view the job with fresh eyes next week, thanks to Specsavers' annual summer boot camp.

Launched last year, the camp prepares students for their pre-registration year, looking at everything from eye examinations to ocular disease.

According to optician Alison Barradell, who enrolled in the camp last year, it's an excellent introduction to the intricate job.

Alison, 25, from the Isle of Man, works at Specsavers' Trongate store in Glasgow.

She said: "The summer camp provided me with the perfect opportunity to hone the important techniques I had learned throughout my studies. Various forms of learning strategies were used, from practical techniques to case scenarios.

"Studying to become an optometrist has been hard work but it's all paying off now.

"The camp is a great new initiative which lets students work in groups and put skills into practice, guided by qualified professionals."

Running from Sunday, July 20 to Tuesday, July 29 at Specsavers' Trongate training centre, the course covers key areas like clinical decisionmaking and contact lenses. …
