ECHO Education: REAL ROLE MODELS; Heenan Pupils Turn Coaches at Primaries

BOXING hero David Price's old school is creating more sporting success by turning students into coaches.

West Derby's Cardinal Heenan - also the old stomping ground of Reds' ace Steven Gerrard - is behind the innovative initiative.

The Honeys green Lane school - a specialist sports college - is so committed to sport even non-contact boxing features on the school timetable.

Today headteacher Dave Forshaw said he was "delighted" old boy David Price had picked up a bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics.

And he revealed his current crop of students were also destined for great things in the world of sport through its Fundamental Skills programme.

From the age of 13 some 150 of his students each year become tutors themselves, coaching primary school pupils in weekly sessions.

The students, with the help of professional coaches, get the younger children up to speed on basic disciplines ranging from running to throwing.

They then hone the skills of the children and direct them towards after-school and community clubs based on their strengths.

In recent weeks children at Huyton's St Margaret Mary Infants School and St Cecilia's Infants, Tuebrook, have been put through their paces. …
